Anatomy of a Draconis Dragon

The scribes have unearthed the skeletons of some ancient Draconis Dragons!  What a great find!  They have managed to recreate  the skeleton so that we can see what the ancient predecessors of today's dragons looked like.  In the picture below you can see that not much has changed in their shape and makeup, and you can see how large they were compared to the average size of an ancient dragon rider.

From their study of these skeletons and the ancient texts, the scribes have learned much about these magnificent beasts.  Their reports are not quite finalized, so I will give you a listing of the known characteristics of the dragons.  As the scribes release more information and finalize their findings, I will update this page.

  • Colors -- white/crystalline, red, black, blue, green, purple, and brown; the color
depends on the territory from which the dragon clan is native to.

  • Blood--venomous and acidic

  • Scales-- covered all of their body, except their underbelly, padding on their feet.

  •      Some scales are harder than others, depending on the type of dragon.  But in
general, the scales were harder than metals.

  • Talons--Dragon's feet were clawed and ended in nail tips called talons.  These
talons are very sharp and storng.  Dragon riders and the lucky would use these
         talons as  swords or knives

  • Eyes -- Did not blink when looking at you, and ancient texts suggest that if you
directly looked into a dragon's eye, you would be paralyzed.

  • Tears--Dragons were very emotional creatures, and at times would cry.  Their
tears are very acidic to non-bonded humans.  During the Great Devastation,
many humans hunted dragons and killed them for their tears, which were
collected in special containers fastened from the scales of the same dragon.  Now
if a human bonded with the dragons -- like the dragon riders do -- then these same
acidic tears became a protective oil that protected the riders from heat and fire.
What causes this transformation is uncertain, but the scribes believe that the
dragon's will comes into play here.  By willingly giving up their tears to the
bonded human, the dragons release some of their magical powers. The dragon
wizards have managed to  recreate these corrosive tears, though they are weaker
than the dragon's original tears.  See the spells section for this potion.

  • Nose--Draconis dragons had a great sense of smell.

Mouth--Naturally, next to the talons, the dragon's mouth was the most dangerous
area of its body.  The mouth is full of  sharp teeth, just as sharp as their talons.
Some dragon species were known to have 2 or 3 rows of these sharp fangs.  Their
mouths are also dangerous because most dragons would expectorate either fire or
their own poisonous blood.  The scribes are still studying the furnace system of
         the dragons.
