I claim the copyright to this tutorial.  You are free to do whatever you please with what you make, but please do not take my tutorial.  Do not send the tutorial through email.  Only share my link.

This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about PSP.  It is intended for high beginners to intermediates to learn how to make a shape by vectors.  There is some vector work and some node editing.  It also involves shading in.  The Tutorial is 7 pages long (to help load time).  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I used Paint Shop Pro 7, but the steps used may also be done in Version 8 or 6.  You may download a free trial at Jasc.

I'm sure there are some easier ways of doing some of the steps, but the purpose of this tutorial is to learn how to use vectors and the different tools of node editing.  I have attempted to be as detailed as possible, so that the beginner can learn about using vectors.  Please feel free to email me, if you get stuck.  And because of the details, this tutorial is long.  *S*  I recommend that you don't try to do the tutorial in one sitting.

Remember to save as a psp file often!

Before we begin, you might want to study the PSP tool bars.  I have labeled the tools on another page.  Click on the link and it will open a new page.  You may want to keep this page open while you work on the tutorial, to refer to the names now and then.  PSP Tools

Now that you have studied the tools, let's begin!

Make the Angel's Wing

1.  Click New File in the top menu bar.  Enter these settings:  width=400, Height=400, Resolution=72.000 pixels/inch, Background color=transparent, image type=16.7 Million Colors (24 Bits).

2.  Set your foreground color to #E1E9F1.  (Click on the Foreground color in the Styles box and type in that number code).  Set your background color to null by clicking on the arrow and choosing the last symbol.

3.  In the left tool menu, choose the preset shape tool.  Set the shape to a triangle.  Check Antialias, check Create as a Vector.  Set the line width to 2 (not 6).  Line style = solid line
set line width to 6

4.  Start your cursor at the bottom of the image and draw out a large triangle.  This will make your triangle upside down.  *S*

5.  Click on the Node Editing tool, and in the Tool Options Box, click on Node Edit.

A note to PSP 8 users: to get to the node editing functions, you must click on the pen NOT the Node Editing tool that is pictured here.

6.  Click on the bottom Node and drag it to the right.  Then click on the top right node, and drag it down a little.  (See where the arrows are in the pic)

7.  Click on the top right node to activate it.  Then Right-click on it and choose Node Type > Symmetric

8.  That should round the corner (see pic below).

9.  Now we will add 6 nodes on the left diagonal side of the triangle. (See pic for placement).  To add the nodes, hold the Ctrl key down.  When you move your cursor over the line you will see ~Add appear by the cursor.  When that happens, left click and a node will appear.  Add a total of 6 nodes.  Try to space the evenly apart, and to leave the bottom one-third of the side blank, but we can adjust the spacing later as we work.

10.  In the picture above, you will see that the 6th node is active (black).  Make your 6th added node active by left-clicking on it.  Pull/drag that node to the left.  Click on the 4th added node, and pull/drag it to the left.    Click on the 2nd added node, and pull/drag it to the left.  Adjust these nodes so that they are staggered a little with the top node.  See the pick below.  Also, pull the 1st, 3rd, and 5th added nodes up a little so that they are slightly centered between the even nodes.

11.  Click on the bottom node (see arrow), and right-click.  Then choose Node Type > Curve After.  An arrow should appear on the left side of the node.

12.  Pull that arrow up a little to makea curve between the 6th node and the bottom node.

Now we will curve the wing tips.  I have numbered the nodes we will be using:

13.  Click on the node for Wing Tip #1.  Then Right-click on it and choose Node Type > Symmetric.

14.  Pull on the arrow and the tell, and rotate just slightly, to form the curve in the wing tip.

15.  Now click on Wing Tip #2, and Repeat Steps #13 & 14.

16.  Now click on Wing Tip #3, and repeat steps #13 & 14.

17.  Now click on Wing Tip #4, and repeat steps #13 & 14

18.  You may need to adjust the roundness or spacing of the nodes.  Just click on the node, and the arrows will appear again.  See pic below.  I tried to make each wing tip about the same thickness.

19.  Click on the bottom node, and right-click.  Choose Node Type > Symmetric.  Move the arrow arround, to curve the wing tip there.

20.  When you are satisfied with the shape of your angel wing, right-click anywhere on the picture and choose Quit Node Editing.

21.  In the Layer Palette, right-click on vector layer and choose Convert to Raster Layer.

22.  Right-click on that layer, and choose Rename.  Rename it Wing.

23.  In the top menu, click Image > Resize.  Resize to 75%.  Make sure that All Layers (at bottom) is NOT checked.

24.  Save your progress.

Now is a good time to take a coffee or soda break.  But don't forget to come back!

Now continue to make the body of the angel.
