This tutorial is intended for a beginner to learn how different photo filters affect color casting.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

To do this tutorial you will also need Photoshop CS or CS2.  You may download a free trial at Adobe.

Remember to save as a .psd file often!

You can read an information page about Color Casting here.

1.  Open up your photograph that you wish to use and resize it:  Image > Resize.  Change the width = 300 pixels

2.  Open a new, transparent image, size = 600 x 400

3.  From the Tools Palette, choose the Single Column Marquee Tool

4.  Hold your cursor over your transparent image by the 300 pixel across mark and left-click.  You will now have a selection column down the middle of your transparent image.

5.  Edit > Fill and flood fill with some color.  I chose white.

6.  Select > Deselect

7. Now in the tool palette, choose the single row selection tool.

8.  On the transparent image, hold the cursor at 200 pixels down the page, and left-click.  Now you have a selection that divides the middle of your picture going across the picture.  Fill it with the same color & Deselect

9.  Click on your photo.  Edit > Copy

10.  With the magic wand, select one of the sections of your transparent image.

11.  Edit > Paste Into Selection

12.  With the magic wand, select another section and Edit > Paste Into Selection.  Repeat this until all four sections are filled.

13.  If you look at your Layer Palette, the 4 pastings are each on their separate layers, and the bottom layer should be your blank image with the white cross in the middle.

Click on the bottom layer and With the magic wand click in the upper left section.

14.  In the Layer Palette, now click on the bottom-most pasted layer (second from bottom).  Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter

15.  Choose the Deep Red Filter.  Leave Density as is.  Place a CHECK in Preserve

16.  Right-click on this Photo Filter  layer and choose Merge Down.

17.  Choose the type tool, set to size = 14 and white color.  Type Deep Red over this section

18.  Now In the Layer Palette, click back on the bottom transparent layer, and select lower right region.

19.  Image > Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter.  Choose Deep Blue

20.  Right-click on the Photo filter layer and choose Merge Down.

21.  Use the text tool to type Deep Blue for that section.

22.  Now In the Layer Palette, click back on the bottom transparent layer, and select lower left region.

23.  Image > Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter.  Choose Deep Emerald

24.  Right-click on the Photo filter layer and choose Merge Down.

25.  Use the text tool to type Deep Emerald for that section.

26.  Now In the Layer Palette, click back on the bottom transparent layer, and select lower right region.

27.  Image > Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter.  Choose Deep Yellow

28.  Right-click on the Photo filter layer and choose Merge Down.

29.  Use the text tool to type Deep Yellow for that section.

30.  Click back on your original picture.  Edit > Copy

31.  Now click on your color casting pictures.  Edit > Paste .  The image will be pasted in the middle.  Use the text tool to type original on the image.  Your graphic should look like so:

32.  With this image you can see the effects of different color filters on the colors in the photo.  Sometimes this effect may be subtle.  Pay attention to the wall behind the dragons.  It's supposed to be white.   Which color brought the wall closest to white?  Subtle effects can be intensified by changing the percentage of the density slider when you choose which color filter you wanted.

Go back and experiment with different densities, and more photos.

***If you are in the RDB Photoshop group.  Save your 4-way filter image and send it in to the group.  File > Save As   JPEG
