Dressing up V4

I own the intellectual copyright for the written tutorial.  What you make is yours, but please do not take my tutorial.  Share only my link.

This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about DAZ Studio.  It is intended for beginners to learn how to dress up V4.  If you have any questions, please feel free to Email  me.

To do this tutorial you will also need DAZ Studio. (version 1.8.2.1)

Ok, you should have all the files needed for this tutorial already loaded.  If not, you need to see this tutorial.

1.  Open up DAZ Studio.

2.  Since you are a probably a first-time user of DAZ, let's make your layout look like mine.  In the top menu, click View > Interface Layout > Select Layout

3.  In the Select Layout window, choose Advanced - Progressive from the drop-down menu.  Click Apply & Accept.

4.  Click on the Pose Tab.

5.  I like to work on a dark background, so let's change the background color.  In the middle of the screen, click on the more options arrow and choose Background Color.  Set it to black.

6.  Now click on the Content tab.  You will probably only see Studio and content in the first menu.  (I also have Poser7 installed).  Click once on Figures.

7.    Find the folder DAZ People and click ONCE on it.  You should see a pic of Victoria V.2 at the bottom.  Double-click on V4.2 picture.

8.  Wait while it's loading.  Eventually, you will see V4 pop up.  Keep the box around here.

If the box disappears (because you clicked somewhere), right-click on her and choose Select V4.  The box will  come back.  You must have this box before you try to add anything to here.

9.  In the same right menu, scroll down and find the folder:  RRV4ShortDress.  You will see a picture of it below the menus.  Double-click on the dress to load it.

10.  It will look something like this.

11.  If you look closely at the bottom of the skirt, you will notice that the legs appear to poke through. the dress.  Usually this happens because of the pose the doll was in when the creator made the dress model.  A quick fix:  Look to the bottom right of the screen and find the Parameters window.  Be sure it says:  Selected Item:  Victoria 4.2

12.  Click on the menu arrow (see where pink arrow points)  and choose Zero > Zero Figure Pose.  Usually this adjusts the position of the doll to the original pose the creator had used.  (This may not get rid of all poke-throughs, and you may create more poke-throughs as you work with the doll.  Another method will be shown later.)

13.  Right-click on the dress and choose Fit-to. (P.S.  ignore the color of the skirt)

14.  Choose Victoria 4.2.  Accept.  This will make the dress move with the doll everytime I move the doll. (P.S.  ignore the hair in the picture, you haven't done that yet)

15.  Now right-click on a part of V4.2 not covered by the dress (like her arm) and choose Select V4.  You always want a box around the figure before you apply hair or other files to it.

16.  In the Content Tab, choose the Hair folder.  You should see the Wavy-tresses-morphing hair picture.  Double-click on the picture to load the hair.

17.  This is what you'll get.  You will notice that part of V4's head pokes through the top.  That's because this hair was originally created for another doll (V3).  But one of the files you downloaded & installed is a hair fit -- a file that someone made to make the hair fit V4.

18.  You need to select the hair first before applying the hair fit.  To do this, right-click on the hair and choose Select figure hair.

19.  Then in the Content tab, click on the Poses folder, then in the right menu, click on V4-base-maria folder.  You will see these pictures.  Double-click on the wavy hair-V4-fit  (pink arrow) to apply the hair fit file.

20.  Now the hair should look like this.  Top of V4 head is gone!

21.  Since we have the content folder open, let's apply the V4 aphrodite texture.  To do this, V4 must be selected.  Right-click on her arm and choose Select Victoria 4.2 -- Dbl Click.

22.  Now in the Content folder window, double-click on Aphrodite-V4base-morph.  Wait and let it load.  Then double-click on the Aphrodite-V4-mat  (PS.  ignore the pink arrow.  I reused same picture)

23.  The changes that these two files make is very subtle that you may not notice.  But here's a before (inset) and after (large) picture.

24.  Now let's add some texture to the dress.   Right-click on the dress and choose Select V4ShortDress.

25.  In the Content > Poses folder  Scroll to find RioCarnevale folder.  Double-click on Carnevale2 folder (circled)  (Do not click on the first one--Carnevale.  There is a problem with the file at the time I wrote this tut and it does not load properly.  Correcting that would be the subject of another tutorial.).

26.  The dress should have changed to those colors.

27.  Right-click on the arm and choose Select Victoria 4.2 -- Dbl Click

28.  Now let's pose her.  This is going to be "simple" since we are using a pose file.  There are ways to manually pose her, as discussed in this tutorial.

In the Content > Pose folder, scroll to find the Dru folder.  Click once on the Dru folder, and then click on the V4 poses.  You will see these choices.  Double-click on the V4_02 pose (second one).

29.   You will see this box:  Pose outside of limits.  Click on Leave limits on.

30.  This is what she will look like now.  Notice that posing her has created some more poke-throughs.

31.  Be sure you are in the Pose window.  Choose the rotate tool (see pink arrow)

32.  Click on the "ball" that is in front of the skirt.  That ball is called a handle.  You should have noticed other handles.  The purpose of the handles are to help pose the skirt.  So click on that front ball.

33.  Hover your mouse over the red circle arc until it turns yellow and then left-click with mouse and pull mouse upward.  This will rotate the bottom of the skirt outward away from her legs.  Rotate it until the right leg is no longer pointing through.

34.  Now  click on the right skirt handle.  (It's the doll's right leg, after all.)

35.  Hover the mouse over the blue circle until it turns yellow, left-click and drag the mouse to the left to swing the skirt out to the left away from the legs.  Swing the skirt out enough so that the right leg does not poke through anymore.

36. Right-click on her legs and choose Select Victoria 4.2 -- Dbl Click

37.  In the content Tab, click on the content folder, then click on the Props folder.

38.  In the Props folder, click on Izabela Shoes.  These are props for V4.  Which means they will add to V4.  You should see the shoe pictures.  Double-click on each shoe to apply the props.

39.  This is what they look like on V4's feet.

Right-click on one of the shoes and Select the shoe.  Then carefully rotate it downward with the rotate tool, to make the shoe fit the same angle as the foot.  Do the same for the other foot.

40.  Now click on one of the handles of the skirt.  We need to turn them off so that they don't show when we render.

41.  Click on the Scene tab.  The handle that you selected will be highlighted.

42.  Turn off all the handles by clicking on the eyes for the handles.  This will hide them from site so you do not see them.

43.  Now you are ready to render and show the rest of the world.  In the top menu, click Render > Render.

44.  A box will pop up telling you not to click on anything in the program.  Click ok and wait for the image to render.  You'll notice the change.

45.  Then ready to save the render:  File > Save Last Render.

46.   In the Save in box, browse to a folder where you want to save.

47.  You have to decide what you want to do with the file.  If you want to make it an image to save on the web or email it-- change the Save as type (pink circle) to JPEG.

If you want to keep the background transparent and save it for use as a tube, change the Save As Type (pink circle) to PNG.

48.  (Optional)  You do not need to do this, but it was a little trouble to dress her up.  If you feel that you will be using V4 in this Short Dress alot, then you can save her in DAZ so that she's ready to use (and all you'd have to do is change the color of her clothes and hair).  File > Save As Scene.  Save this file inside the CONTENT folder of DAZ program  in a folder that you make (I called mine My Posers).
