Making and Saving
Poses

This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about DAZ Studio.  It is intended for beginners to learn how to create and save Poses.  If you have any questions, please feel free to Email  me.

To do this tutorial you will also need DAZ Studio.

We are going to make a "Thumbs Up" pose and learn how to save it for use again on another project.

1.  Open DAZ and choose a figure to work with.  I chose Aiko LE.

2.  In the toolbar at the top of the screen, choose the Rotate Tool.

3.  First we will choose the upper arm to rotate (NOT the shoulder.  Left-click on the upper arm.

When you click on a part, there will be a selection box that shows what body part you have selected.  And since we are using the rotate tool, there is also a rotation wheel.

4.  We want to swing the arm down to the side of Aiko.  Hover your mouse over the blue curve of the wheel until it turns yellow (see picture).   When it turns yellow, left-click and hold the mouse button down, while you drag the mouse to the right.  This turns the wheel and swings the arm downward.

5.  Now we want to arrange her fore arm.  Click on the middle of the forearm to select it. (1).  Grab the Green curve and slide the mouse upward.  (2)  This will bend the arm at the elbow.

You want to bend the arm so that it is basically at a 90-degree angle, like in the pic below.

6.  Now you'll notice that the hand is not exactly lined up properly.  So click on the hand.  You'll notice when you hover over the body part, you'll get a body tag, like "!Aiko 3LE:  rHand".  Watch these tags, for they will help ensure you have the right body part selected.

7.  After selecting the hand,  "GRAB" the red wheel and slide the mouse to the left and down to turn the hand.  You may not need to turn it much, but turn the hand until it is straight vertical.

8.  Now I want to work on the thumb, and it would be better to see from the side.  So at the top, click on the menu button for the Default Camera and choose RIGHT VIEW.

9.  Now select the bottom of the thumb, Thumb 1.

10.  "Grab" the green curve and slide it downward.  This will open the thumb.

11.  Select the middle part of the thumb.

12.  "Grab"  the green curve and slide it downward to move the thumb up to vertical position.

13.  Select the bottom bone of a finger.  Slide the blue curve to the right to bend that finger inward toward the palm.

14.  Repeat Step 13 on EACH finger of the right hand, bending each of them to almost a 90-degree angle.

15.  Now I changed views back to the front.  Click on the camera menu button and choose Perspective View.

16.  Select the tip of the finger and with the blue curve, bend the finger inward toward the palm.

17.  Repeat Step 16 on EACH finger TIP.

18.  Your hand should look something like this:

19.  Now we want a closer look at these bent fingers.  In the camera menu, click on Left View.

20.  In the Camera Palette, choose the circled camera by left-clicking and HOLDING the mouse button down.  When you drag the mouse down towards you, the camera brings you in closer to the hand.

21.  Select each finger tip in turn and use the blue curve to bend it, so that the hands look like she has a closed fist.  Be careful to not bend too much.  The fingernail should not look like it is cutting into her hand!

22.  Change to Right View.

23.  We have the fist shape, we just need to perfect it.  Her fingers are spread out.  They should be close together, closed.  So clicking on EACH bottom bone of the finger, and grabbing the GREEN curve, move the finger up or down to make them closer.

24.  This is what my "thumbs up" looks like from the front.  The pinky still needs a little adjusting.

25.  When you are happy with your pose.  It is time to save it.  After all, you went through alot of trouble and do not want to repeat all this work.  Next project, you can just use a saved pose to get the "Thumbs Up"

First, select the Figure.  Right-click on a part of Aiko and choose  Select !Aikok 3 LE- Dbl Click.

26.  In the top, click File > Save As > Pose Preset

27.  The Filtered Save box comes up.  Now mine is already set, but you will want to make sure that you are in the Content folder of your DAZ program.  You can get there (if you're not already there) by clicking on the Save in menu arrow (circled).  Now I wanted to save my poses in their own folder.  As long as your folder is in the content folder of DAZ, DAZ will access it.  So, I created a folder by clicking on the "Create folder" icon -- the pic of the folder with the "star" on it--2 folder icons after the save in menu.  I called this folder "My Posers"  Then I double-clicked on it.

At the bottom of the box, you need to give it a file name.  Call it ThumbsUpR.  The "R" is for right hand.

28.  The Save Pose Preset Options box comes up.  Set as in the picture.

And that's all there is to saving!

Now let's check out our pose!

29.  Open up the same new figure again.

30.  Right-click on the figure and choose Select Figure Name.  This puts a box around Aiko.

31.  Scroll down the Content Palette and find your "My Posers" folder.  You will find it in the Studio folder.  Click on the My Posers folder

32.  At the bottom of the palette, you will see an thumbnail of the ThumbsUpR pose.  Double-click it to apply the pose.

And now you're able to save and re-use poses.
