Dragon by Selections
A Cute Dragonet, part 3.

If you came to this page by a search engine, please go back to part 1.

46.  Ok, now we are going to shade in the wings, ear, paws,  and brow regions to give it shadows and highlights.  We will use the retouch tool, and start off with the settings below.  From the left menu bar, choose the retouch tool.   First change the drop-down menu to Darken RGB, and set to the numbers in the first image, then change the drop-down menu to Lighten RGB and set the numbers, then change to Soften and set the numbers.

47.  In the Layer Palette, highlight and activate the wings layer.   In the top menu, choose Selections--Select All.  Then Selections--float.  Then Selections--Defloat.  The wings should be selected and the wings layer is highlighted.

48.  Study the picture below.  With the retouch tool set to Darken RGB and the numbers above, draw in the shadows that I have drawn for the wings.  Then change the retouch tool set to Lighten RGB and the numbers above.  Draw in the highlights that I have drawn for the wings.  Remember:  You can always use the undo button and redraw.

49.  When you have the shadows and highlights drawn to your satisfaction, change the retouch tool to Soften and the numbers above.  Soften all the shadow and highlights that you drew.  This is why we selected the area, so that you would not smudge the wings out of shape.  Repeat your shadows and highlights, and then soften, until you are satisfied with the way your wings look.   Then Deselect (Selections--None)

50.  Highlight and activate the ear layer.  Click Selections--Select All.  Selections--Float.  Selections--Defloat.

51.  Study the image below.  Set your retouch tool to Darken RGB and darken in the outer edge of the ear, and darken the middle.  Set your retouch tool to Lighten  RGB, and lighten along the inside edge of the darken line you made (You may need to change the size to 5), and add some highlights in the middel.  Set your retouch tool to Soften, and soften the shadows and highlights.

52.  Study the images below.  Do each layer in TURN:  brow, jaw, belly, each of the paws.
brow layer,  Select All, float, defloat!  Darken, Lighten, Soften.

jaw layer.  Select All, float, defloat!  Darken in a nose, Lighten tip of nose, Soften

belly layer, Select All, float, defloat!  Darken, Lighten, Soften

EACH paw layer, Select All, float, defloat!  Darken, Lighten, Soften.  Deselect

52.  In the top menu bar, choose Selections--merge--merge visible.

53.  Save!

And there you have your very own dragonet!
