I claim the copyright to this tutorial.  You are free to do whatever you please with what you make, but please do not take my tutorial.  Do not send the tutorial through email.  Only share my link.

This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about PSP.  It is intended for upper beginners to learn how to use selections and to shade.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

This tutorial uses selections that I have made.  Click on the link to download the zipped file of my selections, then unzip into a folder onto your hard drive.  Download Selections

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I used Paint Shop Pro 7.04.  You may download a free trial at Jasc.

Remember to save as a psp file often!

Before we begin, you might want to study the PSP tool bars.  I have labeled the tools on another page.  Click on the link and it will open a new page.  You may want to keep this page open while you work on the tutorial, to refer to the names now and then.  PSP Tools

Now that you have studied the tools, let's begin!

1.  Click New File in the top menu bar.  Enter these settings:  width=550, Height=400, Resolution=72.000 pixels/inch, Background color=transparent, image type=16.7 Million Colors (24 Bits).  Click Ok.   Click File--Save As and save this file as SitDragon.psp

2.  In the Layer Palette, right-click on layer 1 and choose New Raster layer.  Name it 1.

3.  In top menu, click Selections > Load from Disk.  Find where you saved the selections and choose dragsit01.sel

4.  Flood-fill the selected area with your color choice for the dragon.

5.  Repeat Steps 2 - 4 for the rest of the selections.  Remember to add a new layer before loading each selection. You should end up with 16 numbered layers.

Here is what my dragon looks like so far:

Now we will add some shading to the dragon.

14.  In the Layer Palette, click on Layer 9 to highlight it.

15.  Choose the Preset Shapes tool from the side toolbar menu.  Set it to the teardrop.  Check antialias, and check create as vector.  Make your foreground color Null and your background color your choice for eye color.  I chose black.

16.  Draw out a tear.

17.  It will have vector handles around it (see first pic).  Put your mouse over the handle in the center that turns into rotating arrows, and rotate the eye into the position you want. (see second pic).  Once that eye is in position, right-click on that vector layer in the Layer Palette and choose convert to Raster Layer.

18. In the Layer Palette, click on the converted eye layer and choose duplicate (first pic).  With the mover tool move the eye into position (second pic).  Click on the Deformation tool (second tool) and shrink the eye a little (third pic).  Click on selection tool.

19.  In top menu, click Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel.  Apply these settings:  Choose the round preset, and change the angle to 294.

20.  Now change to the other eye level and repeat the same Inner Bevel.

21.  Choose the selection tool and set it for ellipse.  Draw an ellipse on the belly by starting the mouse at the level of the top of the feet and in the center between the legs (see where the blue arrow points), and dragging the mouse downward so that the ellipse extends over part of the legs and off the dragon.

22.  In top Menu, click Colors > Adjust > Brightness & Contrast.  Set the brightness to 25.

23.  Now we will use the retouch tool to add some detailing.  Choose the retouch tool.  Then set it to soften and the settings below, the darken and the settings below, then lighten and the settings below.

23.  For each layer study the pictures and darken and lighten in the areas as suggested.  When you are satisfied with the darkened/lightened areas, then soften all fo the adjustments.

In the layer palette, highlight the layer that you want to work on, then darken, then lighten, then soften in the details.
