A Hatchling! ![]() I claim the copyright to this tutorial. You are free to do whatever you please with what you make, but please do not take my tutorial. Do not send the tutorial through email. Only share my link. This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about PSP. It is intended for intermediates to learn how to use preset shapes and to shade. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. This tutorial uses a vector preset
shape that I have made. Click on the link to download the shape,
then unzip into the shapes folder of your PSP program.
Download
Shape for PSP 8 To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro. I used Paint Shop Pro 8, but the steps used may also be done in Version 7.04. You may download a free trial at Jasc. I also used Eye Candy 3.1 Glass, but this is optional. Remember to save as a psp file often! Before we begin, you might want to study the PSP tool bars. I have labeled the tools on another page. Click on the link and it will open a new page. You may want to keep this page open while you work on the tutorial, to refer to the names now and then. PSP Tools Now that you have studied the tools, let's begin! 1. Click New File in the top menu bar. Enter these settings: width=500, Height=500, Resolution=72.000 pixels/inch, Backround color=transparent, image type=16.7 Million Colors (24 Bits). Click Ok. Click File--Save As and save this file as dragonshape.psp 2. In the Left tool menu choose the preset shapes tool. Set the tool to use the shape dragonhatchling
3. In the toolbox for the shapes, check antialias and check create
as vector, line type=solid, width=1.
4. Set your foreground and background color to the same color, the color you want your dragon to be. I chose red. (Don't worry about the egg color right now.) Then with the preset shape tool draw out the dragonhatchling. ![]() 5. Take a look at the Layer Palette. The dragon hatchling is a group of vector layers. If you can't see all of them, click on the + sign to view the layers. See image below. ![]() 6. In the Layer Palette, click on the ear layer so that it is selected. (The word EAR will become boldfaced) 7. Then right-click on the ear layer and choose "Create Raster Selection" ![]() 8. In top menu, click Selections > Promote Selection to Layer. ![]() 9. You should now see a "promoted Selection" layer above the vector layer. ![]() 10. Click on that layer to activate it. Then right-click and choose RENAME. Rename it to the same name as the vector layer--ear ![]() 11. Now you must repeat these same steps (#6 - 10) for EACH vector layer. Be sure to go down the vector layers, and you will find that your raster layers will be created in the same order. *S* It is very important that the raster layers are in the same order as the vector layers, so double-check this before you move one. If a layer is out of order, just drag the layer where it needs to be. When you are done, click on Vector1 layer, then right-click and choose delete. 12. Now I didn't want my egg to be the same color as my dragon. So click on the egg raster layer with the magic wand to select the egg. ![]() 13. In top menu, choose Selections > modify > Expand and set Number of pixels=2. Click ok. ![]() 14. Flood-fill the egg selection with the color you want your egg to be. I chose a creamy pink color, but your egg can be any color, gradient, or pattern! Keep Selected. ![]() 15. I wanted my egg to look slick, so I added a glass effect. In top menu, choose Effects > Plugin Effects > Eye Candy 3.1 (or 4000) > Glass. Apply these settings: Bevel Width=72.95, smoothness = 75, inside marquee, edge darkening=30, gradient shading = 47, refraction=59, opacity=45, tinting=50. The Glass color can be white or a light brown color of your choice. Keep Selected! ![]() 16. In top menu, click Adjust > Noise > Add Noise. Apply 5% Noise, check Uniform. Deselect. ![]() 17. In Layer Palette, click on EYE layer to activate it. ![]() 18. Click on the eye layer with the magic wand to select the eye, and flood-fill it with the eye color you want. I chose yellow. 19. While still selected, click in top menu on Effects > Plugin Effects > Eye Candy 3.1 (or 4000) > Glass. Apply these settings: Bevel Width = 272.67, smoothness = 75, check inside marquee, edge darkening= -15, gradient shading =47, refraction = 83, opacity = 45, tinting =22 Deselect. ![]() 20. In Layer Palette, click on pupil layer to activate. Click on pupil layer with magic wand to select it. Flood-fill with Black. Keep Selected. ![]() 21. In top menu, click Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel. Apply the Round preset (these settings: bevel=pie shape, width = 14, smoothness=15, depth =12, ambience =0, shininess =50, color=white, angle=315, intensity =67, elevation=30) Deselect ![]() 22. In Layer Palette, hide all the layers EXCEPT the eye and the pupil layer. You do this by click on the eye glasses for each layer you want to hide. The glasses will turn into a red X. ![]() 23. Right-click on eye layer and choose merge > merge visible. Right-click and rename the merged layer: eye. ![]() 24. Now choose the paintbrush from the left tool menu. Set
the brush to round, size=2, hardness=100, step=1, density=100, thickness=100,
rotation=0, opacity=100. Foreground Color = Black. Click on
the egg layer in the Layer Palette to activate it.
25. Draw some cracks in the egg (See picture above) 26. In your Layer Palette, click on neck layer. I decided that I did not want the neck ridges to be different colors. If you do skip to the blue instructions. I wanted a solid neck, so in the top menu, I clicked on Selections > Select All. Then clicked on Selections > Float. With the paintbrush set to the same settings in #24, I painted over the neck ridges with my same dragon color (red) that I used at the beginning. If you want your neck ridges to be multi-color,
then hold the shift key down, and click on the transparent "holes" with
the magic wand. Then flood fill these selections with the color of
your choice, I suggest a darker or lighter version of the color you used
for your dragon.
27. SAVE! Now we are ready to add shading and definition to our dragon! Please click continue to go to the
next page.
