Egg Shape

I own the intellectual copyright for the written tutorial.  What you make is yours, but please do not take my tutorial.  Share only my link.

This tutorial is intended for a beginner to learn about creating a custom shape and then creating a text shape.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

To do this tutorial you will also need Photoshop CS3 - CS4.  You may download a free trial at Adobe.

Remember to save as a .psd file often!

1.  Open a new, transparent image, size 500 x 500 pixels

2.  Choose the Ellipse shape tool and draw an ellipse like below.  It doesn't matter what color it is.

3.  Now we will edit the shape.  Choose the "Add Anchor Point Tool"

4.  If you click somewhere on the edge of the ellipse, you will add a point -- a node.  Then you will also be able to see the other nodes.

Click on one node and an arrow will appear.

On the top node, left-click and drag that node upward some to make the egg a little pointy.

On the bottom node, click on the node.  Then drag the arrows a little out to the right and the left of the node.  and drag the node upward just a bit.  This will make the bottom of the node a little wider.

Then click on the left node to make its arrow appear.  Grab the top of the arrow and drag it towards the egg a little.  This will slope the left side so that the egg starts to take shape.

Do the same with the right node, dragging the arrow towards the egg.

Keep adjusting the nodes until you are satisfied with your egg shape.

5.  Edit > Define Custom Shape

6.  Give your shape a unique name.

Now, your shape is saved and ready to use again.  See this tutorial to learn how to share your shape with someone else.   Let's test it out!

7.  Open a new, transparent image, size 500 pixels by 500.

8.  Choose the Custom Shape tool

9.  Click on the first icon.  Then click on the shape menu arrow and choose your egg shape.

10.  Set the color to your color choice and draw the egg.

11.  Right-click on the shape layer and choose Blending Options.  Click on the WORDS  Inner Glow.  Set Blend Mode = Soft Light, Opacity = 75%, Noise = 5%, Color = Black, Technique = softer, Edge, Choke = 8%, Size = 76, Range = 50%, Jitter = 0%

12.  Here is what your egg should look like

13.  Now let's add some text around the shape.   Window > Paths (if it's not checked yet).  You should now see a Paths Tab on your layers palette (or it may have already been there)

14.  Choose the Text tool

15.  Click on the Paths tab in the Layers Palette.

16.  Choose your font, font size, and font color.  Left-click somewhere on the edge of the egg and type your text message.

17.  Right-click on the text and choose Convert to Shape

18.  Your image and layer should look like this.  I typed the same message twice.

19.  Right-click on the egg shape layer and choose Rasterize Layer.

20.  Edit > Transform > Scale  Click on the lock between the width and height.  Reduce the size of the shape so that the text fits properly.

21.  Now save this as a Compuserve GIF.  File > Save As.
