Ghost Pumpkin Globe
I claim the copyright to this tutorial.  You are free to do whatever you please with what you make, but please do not take my tutorial.  Do not send the tutorial through email.  Only share my link.

This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about PSP.  It is intended for intermediates to learn how to use selections.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

This tutorial uses selections that I have made.  Click on the link to download the shape, then unzip into the shapes folder of your PSP program.  Download Selections

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I used Paint Shop Pro 8, but the steps used may also be done in Version 7.04.  You may download a free trial at Jasc.

You will also need an image.  Black-and-white is the best.  However, the tutorial will show you how to change a color image into greyscale.

Remember to save as a psp file often!

Before we begin, you might want to study the PSP tool bars.  I have labeled the tools on another page.  Click on the link and it will open a new page.  You may want to keep this page open while you work on the tutorial, to refer to the names now and then.  PSP Tools

You will need to save the zipped file of selections into a folder on your pc.  Then you have to tell PSP to read from that folder:
1.  Click on File > Preferences > Locations

2.  A  location box comes up.  Click on Selections in the left window.  On the right side click on Add.  Then click on browse and find the folder where you saved the selections.  Mine is highlighted below.  Take the checks off all the other paths.  This way only the selections for this tutorial are avaialble.  Don't worry the other paths will remain, even though they are not checked.

Now that you have set up the  tools, let's begin!

1.  Open the image that you wish to use.  Press Shift + D on keyboard to duplicate it.  Close the original image.

2.  (Optional)  If your image is colored you will need to make the image greyscaled.  In PSP 8, click in the top menu on Image > greyscale.  Minimize the image for later use!
Here's the image I used.

3.  Click New File in the top menu bar.  Enter these settings:  width=500, Height=500, Resolution=72.000 pixels/inch, Backround color=transparent, image type=16.7 Million Colors (24 Bits).  Click Ok.   Click File--Save As and save this file as ghostpumpkin.psp

4.  In the Layer Palette, right-click on the raster 1 layer and add a new raster layer.  Name this layer Globe.

5.   (PSP 8) In the top menu, click Selections > Load/Save Selection > Load Selection From Disk

6.  In the Selection window, use the drop-down menu to choose Pumpkin1.sel

7.  When you click on Ok, you should get the outline of a pumpkin, like this:

8.  Restore your greyscale image.  In top menu, Click Edit > Copy

9.  Click on your new image to activate it.  In Layer Palette, click on Raster 1 Layer to activate it.  Then click in top menu, Edit > Paste >Paste as new layer  The layer should insert itself in the middle.  If it does not, just drag that layer so that it is in the middle.

10.  Use the mover tool from the tool menu to move your picture around until you get the part of the image you want in between the selected pumpkin outline.

11.  In Layer Palette, click on the globe layer to activate it.  Then in top menu, click Selections > Invert

12.  Press Edit > Clear.  This will delete the part of the image outside of the pumpkin selection.

13.  In top menu, click Selections > Invert.  Now the selection is back to a pumpkin shape.

14.  Make sure that the globe layer is still active (highlighted).  In top Layer, Click Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout

Set the cutout box to these settings:  vertical & horizontal=0, Opacity = 100, Blur = 50, and Shadow Colo = #D38A3B  Click ok

15.  Deselect.  Right-click on globe layer, and add new raster layer. Name this layer Globe1.

16.  In the top menu, click Selections > Load/Save Selection > Load Selection From Disk.
In the Selection window, use the drop-down menu to choose Pumpkin2.sel

17.  In  top menu, click Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout.  Change the blur to 30.

18.  After the first 2 cutouts, your picture should look like this:

17.  Deselect.  Right-click on globe layer, and add new raster layer. Name this layer Globe2.

18.  In the top menu, click Selections > Load/Save Selection > Load Selection From Disk.
In the Selection window, use the drop-down menu to choose Pumpkin3.sel

20.  Deselect.  Right-click on globe layer, and add new raster layer. Name this layer Globe3.

21.  In the top menu, click Selections > Load/Save Selection > Load Selection From Disk.
In the Selection window, use the drop-down menu to choose Pumpkin4.sel

22.  In  top menu, click Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout.  Blur= 30.

After the 4th cutout your pumpkin should look like this:

23.  In the Layer Palette, hide the bottom 2 layers, by clicking on the eyes to make red Xs

24.  click on one of the globe layers.  Right-click and choose merge > merge visible.  Right-click on this merged layer and click rename.  Rename this layer GLOBE.

25.  (Optional)  I thought my pumpkin globe looked a little light, so I right-clicked on the globe layer and clicked on Duplicate.  Now I can see the pumpkin lines better.

If you DO NOT want to make a sparkly globe then merge all layers visible and save! and your have a blank tag!  Otherwise, continue on to Step 26.

26.  (Optional)  If you did Step #25 now you will need to merge the globe layers together.  Hide ( X out) the 2 raster layers, right-click on one of the globe layers, and choose merge > merge visible.  Rename this layer GLOBE

27.  Hide (X out) the globe layer, and unhide the raster layers.  Right-click on one of the raster layers, and choose merge > merge visible.  Rename this layer BACKGROUND.
Rename the merged layer BACKGROUND (if you want)

28.  If you would like to add some text, add a new layer above the globe layer.  Use your text tool to add the text, and apply any special effects to your text layer that you would like.  Then merge visible  this layer with your globe layer so that you are back to 2 layers--GLOBE and merged background

29.  Right-click on the merged layer and click Duplicate. REPEAT this so that you have 2 copies  (3 in all) of the merged layer.

30.  Right-click on the Globe layer and click Duplicate.  REPEAT this so tha tyou have 2 copies (3 in all) of the GLOBE layer.

31.  Click on EACH merged background layer and add some sparkles in different places with your tube tool

32.  Rearrange the layers so that you alternate globe layer, then merged layer, globe layer, then merged layer, globe layer, then merged layer from top to bottom (see pic).

33.  Hide all layers but the first two layers.  Click on the top layer.  Right-click and merge visible.

34.  Hide the merged layer, unhide the next globe and copy of merged layer, and hide the bottom two layers (see pic).  Click on the merge layer that is not hidden.  Right-click and merge visible.

35.  Hide the top 2 merged layers and unhide the last globe and merged layer.  Click on the bottom layer.  Right-click and merge visible.

36.  Now you should have 3 merged layers.  UNHIDE all of them and save your image in psp!

37.  Open Animation Shop  Click File > JASC programs >Animation shop

38.  Click on the yellow folder to open the file that you saved.  You should get a picture with 3 frames in it.

41.  Save this gif animation!
