Hen Tutorial

I assume you have some basic understanding of PSP tools.  I consider this tutorial for intermediate to advanced level, but I included some graphics so that maybe beginners can follow it.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. 

This tutorial uses selections that I have made.  Click on the link to download the zipped file of the selections, then unzip into a separate folder. 

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I used Paint Shop Pro 7.0 .  You may download a free trial at Jasc.

This tutorial also uses Eye Candy 3.1--Fur plugin.

Remember to save as a psp file often!

1.  To begin, open a new file, 770 by 480, 72 resolution, transparent background, 
     16.7 million colors.

2.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Find the folder where you saved the selections, 
     and choose hencrown2.sel.  Click ok.

3.  Click on the Paint can (flood fill)  icon on the left side.  Click on the foreground 
     color box and change it to color #A2610C.  Then with the paint can left-click inside 
     the hencrown2 selection and flood it with that color.

4.  Click on Colors--Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast. Set brightness = -15 (negative 
     15), and contrast = 0.  Click ok.

5.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Find the folder where you saved the selections, 
     and choose hencrown.sel.  Click ok.

6.  Click on the Paint can (flood fill)  icon on the left side.  Then with the paint can 
     left-click inside the hencrown selection and flood it with the same color (#A2610C).

7.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  Save as PSP file

8.  Click on Selections--Load from disk.  Choose henbody.sel.  Change the foreground 
     color to #A76F27, and flood fill the selection with the paint can.

9.  While still selected, click on Effects--Plugins--Eye Candy 3.1--Fur.  Change to these 
     settings:  Wave spacing = 104, Waviness = 16, hair length = 3, shininess =22, turn 
     on smooth.  Click ok/apply.

10.  Click on Selections--Load from disk.  Choose henbody_shadow.sel  Click on 
     Colors--Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast.  Set Brightness = -50 (negative 50), 
     and contrast = 0.  Click ok.  Click Selections--None.

11.  Click on Effects--3D Effects--Drop Shadow.  Apply these settings:  horizontal and 
     vertical = 2, opacity = 60, blur = 10, Color = black (#000000)

12.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  Save file.

13.  Click on Selections--Load from disk.  Choose henwing.sel  Flood Fill with the same 
     foreground color (#A76F27).

14.  Click on Effects--Plugins--Eye Candy 3.1--Fur, and apply the same settings as 
     before:  Wave spacing = 104, Waviness = 16, hair length = 3, shininess =22, turn 
     on smooth.  Click ok/apply.

15.  Click on Colors--Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast.  Set Brightness = -15 
     (negative 15), and contrast = 0.  Click ok.

16.  Click on Selections--Load From disk.  Choose henwing_shadow.sel  Click on 
     Colors--Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast.  Set Brightness = -50 (negative 50), 
     and contrast = 0.  Click ok.

17.  Click on Effects--3D Effects--Drop Shadow.  Apply these settings:  horizontal and 
     vertical = 2, opacity = 60, blur = 10, Color = black (#000000)

18.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  Save file.

19.  Click on Selections--Load from disk.  Choose henbeak.sel.  Flood fill with color 
     #E0BE58.  KEEP selected.

20.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  While beak is still selected, Click on 
     Effects--3D Effects--Cutout.  Apply these settings:  horizontal and vertical = 2, 
     opacity = 65, blur = 40, color = #BF972D. 

21.  Change to Line Tool with these settings:  freehand line, width = 2, solid line, 
     color=#7A6124     From the tip of the beak draw in mouth line.

22.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  Save file.

23.  Click on Selections--Load from Disk.  Choose heneye.sel  Flood fill with 
     foreground color = #000000 (black).

24.  Click on Effects--3D Effects--Inner Bevel.  Apply these settings:  pie-shape, 
     width = 14, smoothness = 15, depth =12, ambience = 0, shininess = 50, 
     color = white, angle = 315, intensity = 50, elevation = 30

25.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  Save file.

26.  Click on Selections--Load from Disk.  Choose henstraw.sel  Flood fill with 
     foreground color = #EECB2A.  Click on Effects--texture--straw wall.  Apply these 
     settings:  color = #CCAB12, angle = 0, blur = 50, density= 48, length = 11, 
     width = 5, transparency = 134

27.  On the Layer Pallette, left-click on the straw layer (the top one).  Click on 
     Layers--Arrange--Send to bottom.

28.  Click on Layers--Merge--Merge Visible, and save.
