Lights Up Tag

This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about PSP.  It is intended for beginners to learn how to use animation.  If you have any questions, please feel free to Email  me.

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I wrote this with  Paint Shop Pro X, but the steps may also be done in any version.  You may download a free trial at Corel.

Remember to save as a psp file often!

Download DJ Lights font.

Download Eye Candy 4000 from Alien Skin Plugins

1.  Open new, transparent image, size = 500 x 300

2.  Flood-fill the image with the color you want to make the background of your name.  We will use green for the light string & outline, so use a complimentary color.

3.  Set your foreground & background to the same green color.  Choose Font tool.  Set font = DJ Lights, size = 150 - 180 (depending on name size), stroke width = 1, create in vector

4.  Right-click on name layer and choose Convert to Raster Layer.

5.  Choose the magic wand tool.  Hold the SHIFT key down and click inside the light boxes for each light.

6.  Selection > Modify > Expand Selection.  Expand by 2 pixels.

7.  Flood-fill with the same green color.  Selection > Select None

8.  Hold the SHIFT key down, and click outside the name and don't forget inside the holes of letters such as P's, A's, O's, etc.

9.  In the Layer Palette, click on the bottom layer and Press the DELETE key.  This should delete the background from outside the name.

10.  Selection > Select None

11.  Hold the SHIFT key down, and click inside the light bulbs, one bulb per letter.

12.  Layer > New > Raster Layer.

13.  Selection > Modify > Expand Selection.  Expand by 4 pixels.

14.  Flood-fill the selections with red.

15.  Click twice (somewhat fast)  on the layer name and change the name of the layer to Red.

16.  Effects > Plugins > Eye Candy 4000 > Glass.  Apply these settings.

17.  Right-click on the red layer and choose Duplicate.

18.  Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast.  Brightness = 40, Contrast = 75

19.  In the Layer Palette, click back on the Green name layer (Raster 2). 

20.  With the magic wand tool and holding down the SHIFT key, click in some other lights, one per letter.

21.  Layer > New > Raster layer.  Call it blue.

22.  Selection > Modify > Expand.  Expand Selection by 4.

23.  Right-click on the blue layer and choose Duplicate.

24.  Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast.  Same settings.

25.  Slide the Copy of blue layer to the top of the layer palette.

26.  Click back on the Green name layer (Raster 2), and select more blank lights.

27.  Layer >  new > Raster Layer.  Call this layer Green.

28.  Selection > Modify > Expand.  Expand by 4.

29.  Right-click on the blue layer and choose Duplicate.

30.  Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast.  Same settings.

31.  Slide the Copy of Green layer to the top of the layer palette.

32.  In the Layer Palette, click on the eyes of the two name layers at the bottom and the three copy layers at the top to HIDE these layers.  Then click on the Red layer.

33.  Right-click on the Red layer and choose > Merge > Merge Visible.

34.  Rename the merged layer:  Multi Lights

35.  HIDE  all layers EXCEPT the two name layers.

36.  Right-click on the name layer and choose Merge > Merge Visible.  Rename the merged layer NAME

37.  Right-Click on the Copy of Green layer and choose Duplicate.  Drag Copy (2) of green up to the top and UNHIDE.

38.  Right-click on the Copy of Blue layer and choose Duplicate.  Drag Copy (2) of blue up to the top and UNHIDE.

39.  Right-click on the copy of Red layer and choose Duplicate.  Drag Red (2) of blue up to the top and UNHIDE.

40.  Be sure the copy (2) layers are UNhidden and HIDE  all the layers, including the Name layer at the bottom (disregard pic)

41.  Right-click on the top layer and choose Merge > Merge Visible.  Change the merged layer name to ALL ON

42.  HIDE all layers eXCEPT the two bottom layers.  Right-click on the bottom layer and choose Merge > Merge Visible.  Change the merged layer name to NAME.

43.  Right-click on the Name layer and choose Duplicate.  Make 4 duplicates (you should have 5 copies of this layer in all).

44.  Arrange the layers so that from top to bottom it goes:  All on, name layer, copy of Green, name, copy of blue, name copy of red, Name, Name (like below)

45.  HIDE the bottom layer and the top 5 layers.  Right-click on copy of red layer and choose Merge > Merge Visible.

46.  HIDE the bottom layer, Merged layer, and top 3 layers.  UNHIDE copy of blue layer and the name layer under that copy of blue layer.  Right-click on copy of blue layer and choose Merge > Merge Visible.

47.  UNHIDE copy of green layer and the name layer under that copy of green layer.  HIDE ALL other layers.  Right-click on copy of green layer and choose Merge > Merge Visible.

48.  UNHIDE ALL ON layer and the name layer under that all on layer.  HIDE ALL other layers.  Right-click on all on layer and choose Merge > Merge Visible.

49.  UNHIDE  ALL layers.

50.  Choose the rectangular selection tool.  In the selection tool menu bar, choose Merged Opaque icon (see circle)

51.  Image > Crop to Selection

52.  File > Save As .  Save in PSD format.

53.  Open up  Animation shop.  Open your saved file in animation shop.

54.  Click on the last frame (all lights on)

55.  Edit > Copy

56.  Click on the first frame (lights off) Edit > Duplicate Frames.  Then click back on first frame.

57.  Edit > Paste > Paste after Current Frame.

58.  Edit > Select All

59.  Right-click on one of the frames and change to 40.

60.  Click on the red lights frame.  then hold SHIFT key down and click on blue lights frame, and green lights frame.

61.  Right-click on the red lights frame and set display = 10.

62.  Edit > Copy

63.  Click on very last frame.

64.  Edit > Paste > Before Current Frame.

65.  Click on last frame AGAIN.  Edit > Paste > Before Current Frame.

66.  Click on last frame.  Right-click on it and set display = 100.

67.  Now you are ready to save.  File > Save As.  It will save as a GIF.
