This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about PSP. It is intended for intermediates to learn how to use layers and selections. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro. I wrote this with Paint Shop Pro 9, but the steps may also be done in any version. You may download a free trial at Corel. Remember to save as a psp file often! 1. Open a new, transparent image, size = 400 x 300
2. Flood-fill this image with white.
3. Right-click on the layer in the layer Palette and choose New Raster Layer.
4. With the Rectangle Selection tool draw a rectangle selection area that is about 1/2 the height and 2/3 the width of the image. This is only an approximation. Make your rectangle the size that you want.
5. Flood-fill this rectangle with a color of your choice. 6. In the top menu, click Effects > 3D Effects > Buttonize. Apply: height = 10, width = 10, Opacity = 75, Edge - Transparent, choose color to match your color.
7. Slide the Opacity of this layer to 70%
8. Right-click on the top layer and choose New Raster Layer
9. With the Rectangle Selection tool, draw a vertical rectangle selection so that it overlaps some with the first rectangle (see pic below)
10. Flood-fill this rectangle with a color of your choice. It does not have to be the same color as before. 11. Apply the same Buttonize effect as before. Effects > 3D Effects > Buttonize. Height = 10, width = 10, Opacity = 75, Edge = Transparent.
12. Slide the Opacity level of this layer to 70%.
13. Right-click on the top layer, and choose New Raster Layer. 14. With the selection tool draw another rectangle to overlap (see pic below). 15. Apply the same Buttonize effect as in Step 11.
16. Slide the Opacity Level of this layer to 70%. 17. Click on the eye of the bottom (background) layer to HIDE that Layer.
18. Right-click on the top layer to choose Merge > Merge Visible.
19. Click on the Merged Layer in the Layer Palette to highlight it. With the magic wand select the area OUTSIDE the rectangles.
20. Click on the bottom Layer in the Layer Palette to highlight it, and on the eye to UNHIDE the bottom layer. Press the delete key on the keyboard. This deletes the extra white space.
21. In the top menu, click Layers > Merge > Merge Visible.
22. In the top menu, click Layers > New Raster Layer. Call this layer BACKGROUND. Drag this layer to the BOTTOM and flood-fill with a color of your choice. This will be the background layer.
23. In the top menu, click Effects > Textures > Blinds. Apply these settings: Width = 10, Opacity = 10, Color = black, Horizontal = CHECKED, Light from left/top CHECKED.
24. In the Layer Palette, Right-click on the Merged (top) layer and choose New Raster Layer.
25. Open up the tube of your choice and click Edit > Copy. Then click on the tag image, and click Edit > Paste > As Selection. Move your tube selection around until you have it placed where you want, and right-click to remove the selection ants.
26. A Optional: If you want it to look like your tube is completely contained within that rectangle box, then click on the Merged Layer in the Layer Palette to highlight it. With the magic wand, select the area OUTSIDE the rectangles. Then click on the tube layer to highlight it, and press the Delete key.
OR 26. B Optional: I didn't want the first option. Instead I wanted her leg to hang down, but hang behind the bottom rectangle. To achieve this effect: Highlight the Merged Layer in the Layer Palette. With the magic wand (tolerance = 0), click on the inside of the bottom rectangle.
in the top menu, click Selections > Modify > Expand Selection . Expand by 10 pixels.
In the Layer Palette, click on the tube layer to highlight it. Then press the delete key to delete the part of her leg that overhangs that rectangle.
27. Now I want her arm to be visible but to appear to be behind the bright purple rectangle. In the Layer Palette, click on the Merged Layer to highlight it. With the magic wand (tolerance = 0), click on the inside of the overlap between the two rectangles (see pic below)
In the top menu, click Selections > Modify > Expand Selection. Expand by 10 pixels.
Right-click on the TUBE Layer and choose promote Selection to Layer.
Slide the Opacity Level of the promoted selection layer to 70% Click back on the tube layer and click the Delete key.
28. In top menu, click Layer > New Raster Layer. Call this TUBE 2. 29. Open up your second tube. Click Edit > Copy. Click back on the tag image. Click Edit > Paste > As Selection. Place the selection where you want it over the second rectangle, and then right-click to remove the selection ants. 30. Now for this tube, I just want it to fit inside that 2nd rectangle. So I Highlight the Merged Layer in the Layer Palette. With the magic wand, I click on the excess area outside of the rectangles.
31. Then I click on the Tube 2 layer and press delete on the keyboard.
32. I want the part of the tube that overlaps the 3rd rectangle to look like it is behind that rectangle. To do this: Click on the Merged layer to highlight it. With the magic wand (tolerance = 0), click on the inside of that 3rd rectangle. Then In the top menu, click Selections > Modify > Expand Selection. Expand by 10 pixels.
Right-click on the TUBE 2 layer and choose Promote Selection to Layer. Slide the Opacity of the Promoted Layer to 60% Click back on the Tube 2 layer and press Delete.
33. In the top menu, click Layers > Merge > Merge Visible.
34. In the top menu, click Effects > Textures > Blinds. Apply these settings: Width = 2, Opacity = 24, Color = black, Horizontal CHECKED, Light from left/top CHECKED.
35. In the top menu, click Selections > Select All. Then click Selections > Modify > Contract. Contract Selection by 4. Then click Selections > Invert. Floodfill this border with a color that matches your tag.
