I own the intellectual copyright for the written tutorial.  What you make is yours, but please do not take my tutorial.  Share only my link.

This tutorial is intended for a beginner to learn about animating hanging spider.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

To do this tutorial you will also need Photoshop CS - CS3.  You may download a free trial at Adobe.

Remember to save as a .psd file often!

1.  Open new, transparent image, size 400 x 400 pixels.

2.  Choose the paintbrush tool.  Set foreground color = black.  Set brush size = 26 px.

3.  Left-click ONCE near the middle of the image.  This puts a round dot on the image.

4.  Right-click on the layer and choose blending options.  Click on the WORDS Bevel and Emboss.  Apply these settings:  style = inner bevel, technique = smooth, depth = 450, direction = up, size = 54 , soften = 7, angle = 120 , altitude = 30.  DO NOT click ok

5.  Click on the WORDS Satin.  Apply these settings:  Blend Mode = Multiply, color = black, opacity = 100%, angle = - 114, distance = 85, size = 1832, contour as in image below.  Click ok.

6.  Set brush size = 16 pix.

17.  Layer > new > Layer

18.  Left-click below the other dot, so that you make the spider's head, like so.

19.  In Layer Palette, Right-click on the FX in Layer 1 and choose Copy Layer Style

20.  Right-click on top layer and choose Paste Layer Style

21.  Layer > New > Layer

22.  Set foreground color = white, brush size = 12 or so and draw the eyes of the spider.

23.  Change to the freeform pen tool

24.  Carefully draw the arcs (curves for the four legs on one side of the body.  You will get four shape layers, like in the pic below.

25.  In the Layer Palette, click on the eyes of ALL the layers EXCEPT the four shape layers.  This will hide those layers.  Now right-click on the top layer and choose merge Visible.

26.  Right-click on the top merged shape layer and choose Duplicate.

27.  Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal

28.  With the mover tool, fix the legs to look ok.

29.  In the Layer Palette, Drag the two leg layers to the bottom (under the body and head)

30.  Right-click on the top layer and choose Merge Visible.

31.  Layer > New > Layer

32.  Change to the line tool.  Draw a vertical line (to represent the web).

33.  Drag this layer to the bottom below the spider.  Right-click on this layer and choose Rasterize Layer.

34.  Image > Trim.  to cut out the excess transparent space.

35.  Right-click on the bottom (web) layer and choose Duplicate Layer.

36.  With the mover tool place the spider so that only a little bit of web sticks out the top.

Click on the eye of the bottom layer to hide that layer.

On the duplicate layer:  With the rectangle marquee tool, select the bottom part of the web that shows below the spider.  Press the DELETE key.

37.  Right-click on the BOTTOM layer and choose Duplicate layer.

UNHIDE the next - to - bottom layer.

Draw a rectangle selection so that the web is slightly longer than before.

Press the DELETE key.

38.  Right-click on the BOTTOM layer and choose Duplicate layer.

39.  Right-click on the BOTTOM layer and choose Duplicate layer.

UNHIDE the next - to - bottom layer.

Draw a rectangle selection so that the web is slightly longer than before.

Press the DELETE key.

We're going to leave that little space (just enough space for the spider to climb to the bottom).

40.  DELETE the bottom layer that was hidden.  Counting the spider, I have 5 layers.

41.  Window > Animation

42.  You should have these windows:  top left with spider is the image window.  Top right is the Layer Palette.  Bottom (half-hidden) is the animation window.

In the Layer Palette.  HIDE all layers except for the top (spider) layer.

43.  In the Animation window, click on the animation menu (see pink circle) and choose Copy Frame.

44.  Click on the animation menu again and choose Paste Frame.  After current frame.

45.  UNHIDE the 2nd layer.  Highlight the top (spider) layer and move the spider so that it's hanging at the bottom of that web.

Click on the Second Frame.

46.  Click on the animation menu, and choose PASTE Frame.  After Current frame.

UNHIDE the 3rd layer and move the spider to hang at the bottom of that web.

Click on the 3rd frame.

47.  Click on the animation menu, and choose PASTE Frame.  After Current frame.

UNHIDE the 4th layer and move the spider to hang at the bottom of that web.

Click on the 4th frame.

48.  Click on the animation menu, and choose PASTE Frame.  After Current frame.

UNHIDE the 3rd layer and move the spider to hang at the bottom of that web. (our spider changed its mind and climbed upward a bit)

Click on the 5th frame.

49.  Click on the animation menu, and choose PASTE Frame.  After Current frame.

UNHIDE the 4th layer and move the spider to hang at the bottom of that web.

Click on the 6th frame.

50.  Click on the animation menu, and choose PASTE Frame.  After Current frame.

UNHIDE the 5th layer and move the spider to hang at the bottom of that web.

51.  Hold the CTRL key down, and click on FRAMES 1, 2, 3, and 4. (up until the spider climbed upward)

52.  Click on the animation menu and choose Copy Frames.

53.  Click on the last frame.

54.  Click on the animation menu and choose Paste Frames.  After current Frame.

55.  Those frames should still be selected at the end.  Click on the animation menu and choose Reverse Frames.

56.  Hold the CTRL key and select all the frames.  Click on the time delay menu (see pink circle) and choose 0.1 seconds.

You can leave all the times there or you can change some of them to make the spider look like it pauses now and then.  I clicked on Frame 5 and changed the time delay to 0.5 seconds.  Then I clicked on Frame 7 and changed that time delay to 1.0 seconds.

57.  Now you are ready to save.  You will save this twice--once to be placed on a web page/email and once to use as a file for another animation tut.

For the webpage/email:

File > Save for Web & Devices

Set the preset to GIF 128 dithered.

For use in another animation:

File > SAVE AS > PSD format

Just for your information:  You can save this as a QuickTime movie:

File > Export > Render Video

(You have to have Quick Time installed to view the file, though)
