Stairway of Hope

This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about PSP.  It is intended for intermediates to learn how to use layers.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I used Paint Shop Pro 8, but the steps used may also be done in Version 7.04.  You may download a free trial at Jasc.

You will need these supplies.

You will need to download MuRa's Filter Meister  Cloud Plugin

Remember to save as a psp file often!

1.  Open new, transparent image, 600 x 600 pixels.

2.  Flood-fill your image with a pale blue gradient, Angle = 0, Repeats = 0

3.  In layer palette, right-click on layer and choose New Raster Layer

4.  Choose the Rectangular selection tool.  In the tool options bar at the top, click on Custom Selection (circled).

5.  Set the selections to these settings:  Top = 500, Left = 0, Right = 600, Bottom = 600

6.  In top menu, click Selection > Modify > Feather.  Number of pixels = 20.

7.  Flood-fill this selection with a very dark blue.

8.  Open up the TWstaircase tube.  In top menu, click Edit > Copy.

9.  Click on the image you filled and in top menu click Edit > Paste > Paste as New Layer.

10.  In top menu, click Image > Resize.  Resize to 80%.  Be sure Resize All Layers is UNCHECKED.  With the mover tool, move the staircase down a little so that it just overlaps the dark blue part.

11.   In Layer Palette, right-click on top layer and choose New Raster Layer.

12.  Choose the Lasso tool and set it to Freehand.  Select a region that would be like the outline of a cloud at the base of the top landing of the staircase.  See pic below.

13.  In top menu, click Effects > Plugins > MuRa's Filters > Cloud.  Apply these settings:  100, 150, 30, 0,0,0,0,0,0 .

14.  Keep Selected.  In top menu, click Adjust > Blur > Gaussian Blur.  Radius = 20.

15.  Selections > None.

16.  In Layer Palette, right-click on cloud layer and choose Duplicate.

17.  In Layer Palette, Drag the copy of the cloud layer below the staircase layer.  (Make it Layer #3)

18.  Open up the angel tube.  In top menu, click Edit > Copy.

19.  Click back on staircase image.  In top menu, click Edit > Paste > Paste as New layer.

20.  In top menu, click Image > Resize.  Resize to 35 %.  Be sure Resize All Layers is UNCHECKED.

21.  With your mover tool move the angel into position on the cloud up top.  Then in the Layer Palette, drag the angel layer one layer down (below the first cloud layer).

22.  Right-click on TOP layer of Layer Palette and choose New Raster Layer.

23.  With the Lasso tool set to freehand, draw another outline of a cloud, but this time let the cloud take up the entire top half of the picture.   The bottom of the cloud should not go below the bottom landing of the staircase.  See pic below.

24.   In top menu, click Effects > Plugins > MuRa's Filters > Cloud.  Apply these settings:  100, 40, 30, 0,0,0,0,0,0 .

25.  Open up the Despair tube.  This is not my tube, but I clothed her.  lol  In top menu, click Edit > Copy.

26.  Click on staircase image.  In top menu, click Edit > Paste > Paste as New Layer.

27.  In top menu, click Image > Resize.  Resize to  40%.  Be sure Resize All Layers is UNCHECKED.

28.  In top menu, click Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow.  Apply these settings:  Vertical = - 3, Horizontal = 20, Opacity = 25, Blur = 15, and Color = Black.

29.  Set your foreground color to the gradient, Angle = 50, Repeats = 5.

30.  In Layer Palette, Right-click on top layer and choose NEW Raster Layer.

31.  Flood fill the layer with the gradient.  In top menu, click Selections > Select All.

32.  In top menu, click Selections > Modify > Contract Selection.  Contract by 10 pixels.

33.  Flood-fill the selection with the dark blue you used earlier.

34.  In top menu, click Selections > Modify > Contract Selection .  Contract by 2 pixels.

35.  Flood fill the selection with the gradient.

36.  In top menu, click Selections > Modify > Contract Selection.  Contact by 2 pixels.

37.  Flood fill the selection with the dark blue.

38.  In top menu, click Selection > Modify > Contract Selection.  Contract by 2 pixels.

39.  On keyboard press delete key.  In top menu, click Selections > None.  You have just made a frame.

40.  Choose your text tool  Set to whatever font you want.  I chose Casanova.  Choose size = 72 pixels.  Set to vector.  set your foreground to a gold gradient, and your background to the blue gradient.  Type the word:  hope.

41.  Place the word hope into position.  Then  Right-click on the vector layer and choose Convert to Raster Layer.  Slide the Opacity bar down to 30 %

 

42.  Using the same text settings, except change size to 72 - 108 points.  Type your name.

43.  In Layer Palette, right-click on vector layer and choose Convert to Raster Layer.

44.  In top menu, click Image > Rotate > Free Rotate > Left 90 degrees.  Be sure All Layers is UNCHECKED.  Move your name into position.

45.  In top menu, click Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow.  Apply these settings:  Vertical and Horizontal = 1, Opacity = 50, Blur = 5, color = black.

46.  In top menu, click Layers >  Merge > Merge All (Flatten)

47.  Resize if necessary.  Save as a jpeg.
