Tree by Paintbrush

I wrote this tutorial on my own.  Any similarity to another tutorial is purely coincidental.  I claim the copyright to my tutorial. You are free to do whatever you please with what you make, but please do not take my tutorial.  Do not send the tutorial through email.  Only share my link.

This tutorial was created for some friends of mine who wanted to begin learning more about PSP.  It is intended for beginners to learn how to draw a tree and use shading.  If you have any questions, please feel free to Email  me.

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I wrote this with  Paint Shop Pro X, but the steps may also be done in any version.  You may download a free trial at Corel.

Remember to save as a psp file often!

1.  Open a new, transparent image, size = 450 x 450

2.  Choose the paintbrush tool.  Set shape = round, size = 10, hardness = 100, step = 10, density = 100, thickness = 100, opacity = 100.

3.  Choose foreground color that's a medium gray.  Draw a tree.

4.  With the magic wand, select the tree.  Right-click and choose Promote Selection to layer.

5.  Then add some brown and black coloring to shape the tree.  Vary the brush size between 3 and 1

6.  Choose the smudge tool.  Set it to shape = round, size = 10, hardness = 50, step = 30, density = 100, thickness = 100, opacity = 100.

7.  Smudge the colors in to blend them and shape the grain in the tree.  With the paint brush, add some white highlights, and smudge them in, too.

8.  Choose the soften tool.  Set it to shape = round, size = 25, hardness = 100, step = 10, density = 100, thickness =100, opacity = 100

9.  soften the colors in the tree by dragging with the left mouse button pushed.

10.  Add more color as necessary with the paintbrush to create the shading and grain on the tree.  Then smudge it in.

11.  Choose the lighten/darkening tool.  Set shape = round, size = 10, hardness = 75, step = 10, density = 80, thickness = 100, opacity = 70.

12.  Right-click and drag the cursor to darken.  Darken along the edges and at the joints of branches (blue arrows).  Left-click and drag the cursor to lighten.  Lighten along the center of branches (white arrows)

13.  Choose the soften tool and soften in the lightening and darkening.

14.  Right-click on the tree layer (bottom) and choose duplicate.

15.  Drag the copy layer to the top

16.  Change the Blend mode to Hue (Legacy)

17.  Layers > Merge > Merge Visible.

18.  You can add some color to your tree by colorizing it:  Adjustment > Hue/Saturation > Colorize

19.  Save this as a tube:  File > Save As  (psp format)
